Getting Here

The Brewarrina Shire sits in the heart of north‑west New South Wales, where the outback opens up into big skies, ancient river systems and welcoming country towns. We’re approximately 760 km from Sydney and around 820 km from Brisbane, making Brewarrina an iconic road‑trip destination for travellers looking to experience real inland Australia.

Covering more than 19,000 square kilometres, the shire stretches to the Queensland border and is surrounded by the local government areas of Walgett, Warren, Bogan (Nyngan) and Bourke.

By Road

The Brewarrina region is connected mostly by fully sealed highways and roads, making access from major centres smooth and reliable. Some regional and local roads, however, are gravel or unsealed and are only suitable in dry weather. After rain, these roads are often closed for safety. Before travelling, be sure to check LiveTraffic.com for the most up to date road information.

Travelling through outback NSW is part of the adventure, but it’s important to stay alert. Wildlife and livestock are common on rural roads, especially at dawn and dusk. You may encounter kangaroos, emus, wild goats and cattle and sheep near unfenced areas.

Drivers unfamiliar with regional travel should also be aware of cattle grids, which are common along country roads and mark transitions between properties or grazing areas.

Coach & Transport Options

Transport for NSW operates regional coach services connecting Brewarrina with Bourke, Walgett and Dubbo.
