A VILLAGE STEEPED IN STORIES

Angledool

Tucked away on the eastern edge of the Brewarrina Shire, the village of Angledool offers a rare glimpse into the past. Established in the late 1800s, this once-thriving opal mining settlement still carries the character, charm and quiet resilience of its early days.

Wander through the village and you’ll find buildings that have stood for more than 120 years, each one holding its own chapter of Angledool’s story. The most striking is the old domed-roof town hall, an architectural curiosity crafted from local mud bricks. Its rounded silhouette and earthy texture make it one of the most distinctive historic buildings in the region.

Angledool’s opal history is legendary. More than a century ago, miners unearthed an extraordinary 900‑carat black opal here, later named the Fire Queen. Sold at the time for just £100, its value today is estimated in the tens of millions. A unique reminder of the riches that once (and may still be!) hidden beneath this quiet patch of country.

Whether you’re drawn by history, architecture or the romance of Australia’s opal fields, Angledool invites you to slow down, explore and imagine life in a frontier village where fortunes were made and stories still linger in the dust.
