Angledool

Tucked away on the eastern edge of the Brewarrina Shire, the village of Angledool offers a rare glimpse into the past. Established in the late 1800s, this once-thriving opal mining settlement still carries the character, charm and quiet resilience of its early days.

The most striking is the old domed-roof town hall, an architectural curiosity crafted from local mud bricks. Angledool’s opal history is legendary. More than a century ago, miners unearthed an extraordinary 900‑carat black opal here, later named the Fire Queen. Sold at the time for just £100, its value today is estimated in the tens of millions. A unique reminder of the riches that once (and may still be!) hidden beneath this quiet patch of country.
