A QUIET VILLAGE WITH A COBB & CO LEGACY

Gongolgon

The quaint and picturesque village of Gongolgon sits gently along the Bogan River, carrying with it the echoes of a time when horse-drawn coaches stitched together the vast landscapes of outback NSW. Once a key stop on the famous Cobb & Co trail, Gongolgon played an important role in connecting travellers, mail and supplies across the region.

Twice a week, two local horse coaches would meet the main Cobb & Co service at Gongolgon, collecting passengers bound for Brewarrina and the settlements further north. For decades, this tiny village was a bustling waypoint - its quiet streets today giving little hint of the movement and anticipation that once defined it. The last coach rolled through in 1923, unable to compete with the arrival of the railway, marking the end of an era and the beginning of Gongolgon’s slower, more peaceful rhythm.

Just beyond the village, the Bogan River offers a serene escape for visitors. Its shaded banks are ideal for fishing, birdwatching and simply soaking in the stillness of the landscape. Keen observers may spot a variety of native birdlife drifting between the river gums, adding to the sense of natural calm.

Whether you’re following the old Cobb & Co routes, exploring the Shire’s smaller villages or seeking a quiet riverside moment, Gongolgon welcomes you with history, charm and the gentle pace of country life.
