Historic Barwon Bridge
STEP BACK IN TIME
The historic Barwon Bridge is one of just two remaining early timber lift-span bridges left in NSW.
Built in 1888, it opened up the “back country,” in remote NSW, and could lift in the centre allowing paddle steamers carrying wool and other supplies to traverse the river.
Now closed to traffic, it’s a picturesque spot for sunrise and sunset. In the shadow of the bridge lies an acclaimed free riverside camping area, with bathrooms, picnic area, fire pits, hybrid gym and boat ramp.
Launch your watercraft from the boat ramp, fish from the pontoon, or simply kick back under a gum and watch the world float by.
Visit when the river is low in times of dry, you can even spy a hidden wreck nearby. An early paddle steamer, the Wandering Jew in her riverbed resting place after she was sunk by fire in 1914.
